Independent LOLER examinations for your lift

A LOLER thorough examination is a formal assessment of your lift by a competent person. It is separate from routine servicing and maintenance, providing an independent assessment of whether the equipment remains safe for continued use.

Our competent examiner assesses the lift and its safety-critical components, identifying any defects or deterioration that may require attention. You receive a detailed report setting out the findings and any actions required.

How often does a lift need a LOLER examination?

The frequency of examination depends on the type and use of the lifting equipment.

Passenger-carrying lifts normally require a thorough examination every six months, while goods-only lifting equipment is generally examined every 12 months. A competent person may specify a different examination scheme where appropriate, and additional examinations may be required following significant changes or exceptional circumstances.

What does a LOLER thorough examination cover?

A LOLER thorough examination is a systematic and detailed assessment of the lift and its safety-critical components.

The exact scope of the examination depends on the lift condition, use and the professional judgement of the competent examiner. The examination considers matters that could affect the safe operation of the lift, including deterioration over time.

Depending on the lift, this can include examination of:

Safety-critical mechanical components
Electrical safety systems
Lift doors and landing equipment
Suspension and traction components
Braking systems
Safety gear and associated components
Lift car and shaft equipment
Components subject to wear, damage or deterioration
Other parts of the lift relevant to its safe continued operation

The examination results are recorded in a written Report of Thorough Examination, which identifies any defects requiring action and states when the next examination is due.

No. A LOLER thorough examination is a formal assessment carried out by a competent person. Planned maintenance is the routine servicing and inspection required to keep the lift safe, reliable and operating correctly. Both are important and one does not replace the other.

Where a defect presents an immediate danger, the lift should not be used until the defect has been rectified. Other defects may require action within a specified timescale, as detailed in the examination report. Altius Lifts can assess and carry out remedial work where required.

The examination must be carried out by a competent person with the appropriate knowledge, experience and understanding of the equipment. They must also be sufficiently independent and impartial to make an objective assessment.

LOLER applies to lifting equipment used at work. A private domestic lift may therefore fall outside LOLER, whereas lifts in communal residential buildings or workplaces can be subject to LOLER requirements. If you're unsure, we can advise you on your particular circumstances.
